Our meeting starts at 9:00 A.M. Among other things, we will discuss exploring various options on implementing chess scholarship programs in Minnesota. Texas Tech University awarded four (4) full scholarships at this year's Polgar and Denker events. The winners are Julia Kerr, Eunice Rodriguez and Louiza Livschitz, who finished 1-3 at the Polgar, respectively. The fourth recipient was Warren Harper, winner of the Denker. You can read full details at scholarship recipients. Tech's investment quickly catapults them into the top echelon to compete with University of Texas at Dallas (UTD) (our own IM John Bartholomew is a UTD scholarship recipient and pursuing a degree in Business Administration) and University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC). These universities understand the value of chess in education and the return for their investment. The MSCA is currently talking with colleges and universities about pursuing chess programs at their institutions. Benefactors and donations are needed to make Minnesota chess scholarships a reality. Your help and generosity is greatly appreciated. Denker and Polgar Results Denker & Polgar Results Kevin Wasiluk turns in a superb effort at the Arnold Denker Tournament of Champions scoring 4.5/6. He was ranked ninth coming into the event and finished tied for fourth place, fifth on tie-breaks. Laura Howard finishes with an even score 3.0/6 at the Susan Polgar National Invitational for Girls. Ranked 38th, she played up in most of her matches to finish tied for 21st place, 27th on tie-breaks (corrected once tie-breaks were announced, previously listed as 29th). Well done! Monroi only covered a hand full of matches for the final three rounds of these events. You may view those matches and complete standings for them by going to Champs. USCF Executive Board Results Susan Polgar, Randy Bauer and Paul Truong were elected to four (4) year terms on the Executive Board. Jim Berry was elected to complete the remaining two years (2) of Robert Tanner's term. These results will be submitted to the Delegates for ratification on Saturday, August 4th.
